Matter is a multi-layered body of work drawing attention to the forces of nature that occur over time without our awareness. The eroded timber sculptures were charred and then brushed back, inspired by an old Japanese method of preserving timber called Shou Sugi Ban. The charcoal dust from the eroded sculptures was collected to compose the sediment or second layer of the work. The material charcoal (or carbon) was purposefully chosen to allude to the commonality of our existence, that there is a cosmic connection.
